2hr RACE BOOKLET 2024

Here’s the info you need to register for and prepare for the Kaiapoi Adventure Race. If you need more info, check out the event programme, the gear list and rules, or contact us with any specific questions not covered.

Disciplines

Mountain biking – the mountain biking will take place on stop-banks, gravel roads and mountain-bike tracks which are mostly flat.

Trekking – the trekking will be a mixture of trails, streams, bush and forestry areas.

Navigation – a key part of the race is navigating to the checkpoints using map and compass. No GPS allowed. Maps are provided and are either topographical style maps or orienteering maps. The 2hr race will be beginner level and the 4hr will be beginner/intermediate level with some optional checkpoints being trickier to navigate to.

Mystery activities – these will be revealed on the day, and are likely to be physical activities with some brain-power required.

Difficulty

2hr Race

The 2hr event is designed for families and beginners to Adventure Racing. If you’re keen to try an adventure race but unsure if you could do it then this is the race for you. It’s also a great race for parents to do with their children and it’s likely that over half the field in the 2hr will be families and school teams.

The use of optional checkpoints makes the race achievable for a variety of ability levels.

To complete the 2hr event you will need to be able to jog/walk approx. 5km off road, and mountain bike approx. 10km on forestry roads, farmland or single-track (distances will be longer if getting optional checkpoints).

The race is set so that everyone needs to be back within the 2 hours.

4hr Race

The 4hr event is designed so that the everyday athlete can complete the course (provided you have done some training & navigation practice!). The navigation in this event will be based around tracks, roads and rivers making it achievable for those new to navigation.

The use of optional checkpoints means that the 4hr event will still be a challenge for beginner/ intermediate level competitors who have some experience in adventure racing.

To complete the 4hr event you will need to be able to jog/walk approx. 9km off road, and mountain bike approx. 20km on forestry roads, farmland or single-track (distances will be longer if getting optional checkpoints).

The race is set so that everyone needs to be back within the 4 hours

Team Size

You can race in a team of 2, 3 or 4 people.

School Teams

There are two age categories for a school team. Junior (yr 9 – 10) and Senior (yr 11 – 13).

Prizes

Thanks to our generous sponsors we will have a fantastic array of spot prizes to give out at registration.

Support Crew

No support crews are required.

The race is unsupported. That means support crews are not allowed. You have to do all your transitions yourself. This creates an even playing field and means you don’t have to rope in a support crew. Friends and family are of course welcome to come to cheer you on and take photos. There will be plenty of spots along to course to view the race, but please don’t get in the way.

The races will start and finish in the same place so you don’t have to sort any transport.
